Institute of Social Sciences in Agriculture

The Institute of Social Science in Agriculture at the University of Hohenheim is dedicated to understanding the complex challenges within agri-food systems. Our research focuses on exploring the manifold interactions and interdependencies among social, cultural and ecological entities and spheres that shape these systems, with the aim of facilitating transitions towards sustainability in production, processing, use and consumption. We investigate the values, practices, and opportunities that can serve as levers for positive change, providing actionable insights and methodological support to stakeholders across the agricultural sector. Through our work, we strive to contribute to more sustainable and resilient agri-food systems that benefit society as a whole.

The institute is composed of three distinct yet interconnected departments, each with its specialized focus.

Department 430a concentrates on micro-level social dynamics, employing concepts from social psychology, sociology, and organizational development. With a strong emphasis on advisory systems and innovation research, this department adopts a constructivist view within system concepts.

Department 430b is rooted in social-ecological systems research and emphasizes place-based studies at local and regional levels, primarily within Europe. This department is deeply engaged with concepts of resilience, landscape and food studies, and transformation research.

Department 430c has a special focus on geographic and spatial analyses, with research spanning both temperate and tropical contexts. It combines qualitative, place-based research with large-scale quantitative analyses, drawing on sustainability and land systems science.
